Although advertising provides consumers with plenty of choices to buy products or services, its negative influence should not be overlooked. The power of advertising makes people spend more money than necessary, and this can be seen in the high sales of popular consumer goods. Why advertising has such tremendous power that people often buy things they really do not need?

In this age of multiple media, advertising is omnipresent in modern society. Everywhere we go, everywhere we look, we are inundated with messages. Advertising can be found on television, radio, the Internet, newspapers and magazines. We do not even have to think for ourselves, and all we have to do is sit on our comfortable couch and be told how to live our lives. From how to work, what our homes should look like, how to meet people, what to drive, practicality every facet of our lives is taken care of. A good advertisement tells us we need something before we think we do. It offers us a look into the ideal life, the ideal body, the ideal mate, all wrapped in an ideal world. It is amazing the influence that advertising has on our lives and the power these “ad men” (and women) have over us. Interestingly, advertising makes us feel insecure, and feel that we are not good enough as we are; and, as a result, we are emotionally manipulated. That is the power of advertising.

However, the high sales of popular consumer goods do not reflect the real needs of the society in which they are sold. Instead, they only reflect the power of advertising that is stimulating people to constantly want things: want this and want that. In a society of extreme consumerism, many people are persuaded to spend money they do not have for things they really do not need. If this urge to spend is not controlled, it can lead to serious financial difficulties. The image of “shopaholic “ sounds humorous to many people, but is a real problem for anyone who becomes one. Strange but true, many “impulsive-buying” people know that half the money they spend is wasted, but they can never find out which half. Typically, when advertising creates needs rather than helping to satisfy them, it contributes to high levels of dissatisfaction along with high sales of consumer goods within a population that has been trained to desire ever more material goods.

As a conclusion, it is understood what role advertising is playing in today’s consumer market. The high sales of popular consumer goods are a reflection of the power of advertising and not the real needs of consumers. The good news is we are the ones with the power to choose.
