  Topic:

Some people who have been in prison become good citizens later, and it is often argued that these are the best people to talk to teenagers (school students) about the dangers of committing a crime. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

It is arguable that ex-inmates who have been successfully reformed in prison could later become honorable citizens. While some people think that ex-prisoners are the best people to talk to young people about the dangers of crime, most people do not agree. Here are two sides of the argument.

On the one side, why ex-offenders should be given a part in taking to school students as a way to cut youth crime? It is argued that they could do more to divert teenagers from crime than does the justice system that struggles to address youth crime. To begin with, some ex-prisoners who become good citizens later probably know the streets and what is in young people’s heads better than the population as a whole who have never been incarcerated before. In certain respects, these “bad-become-good” citizens have a lot of “moral principles” to teach young people and will be listened to, because they can show them the consequences of crime for themselves. What is more, they know why young people misbehave because they did it themselves, and they know how to encourage personal responsibility because they have acquired it the hard way. Therefore, to some degree, they may be the best people to talk about the dangers of committing a crime.

On the other side, it is argued that most men and women who return to society from prison are ill-equipped to give advice to teenagers. Young people need not to have sympathy for those who spent time behind bars and they are not likely to listen seriously to the formerly incarcerated. For one thing, society in general does not trust all too many ex-inmates who had got trouble with the law that sent them to prison in the first place. In fact, the public tend to think that ex-offenders remain a threat to society because it is hard for ex-prisoners to become tax-paying and productive citizens. Chances are that teenagers could be given wrong lessons and being misled to believe that crime pays off, otherwise there would be no crime at all. Even becoming good citizens later, ex-prisoners are far from being the best persons to talk about the dangers of committing a crime, if only considering that three quarters of ex-inmates are rearrested within five years, according to statistics over the past decades.

In conclusion, there are two sides of the argument about whether some people who have been in prison become good citizens later. As a rule, people do not agree that those who re-enter into society after having served terms could be the best individuals to talk to teenagers about the dangers of committing a crime. However, there are always exceptions to the rule.
