  IELTS Essay Topic:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Saving money is a good habit for an individual after retirement. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Example Writing (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):

Putting money away for retirement is a rewarding habit that we can all live with. As financial security in retirement doesn't just happen, it takes planning, and yes, money for a pension. It is appropriate to argue that we are expected to liver longer and that retirement costs money.

Firstly, saving into a pension matters, if only considering that life after retirement is longer than previously seen. To illustrate, experts say that the average individual in a modern society spends 20 years in retirement. Based on this calculation, it is advisable to make saving for retirement a priority on a long-term basis. That is to say, the sooner we start saving for a pension, the more time our money has to grow for the benefits during our long leisure years as planned. Therefore, failing that means the absence of a reasonable pension. This being the case, a pension-less individual is likely to face the prospects of a longer, but probably helpless life.

Secondly, the key to a secure retirement is to plan ahead, anticipating that retirement is expensive. This implies that we ought to take charge of our financial future, not counting on public funding for a means-tested pension. Experts estimate that we need about 70 percent (or more) of our pre-retirement income to maintain our standard of living when we stop working. Among other examples, the expenses of healthcare are rising. Besides, the financial situation is even more pressing if we still have to continue paying for our children's higher education. Accordingly, the issue is not only about why saving is important (because it is) but also about how to manage saving wisely and make our money go further.

To sum up, saving money for a pension is a good habit in view of modern people's prolonged lifespan and increased living standards. Under no circumstances should we take a handsome pension for granted, but rather we should set financial goals for our old age. Remember that that habit must start as early as possible, and that it is never too late to start saving. (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh)
