  谢振礼 雅思范文: 旅行国外

  IELTS Writing Task 2

  Topic:

Some people think that travel is necessary to learn about other nations. Others, however, think that TV and the Internet are the best ways to learn about other countries. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

Without leaving the comfort of their homes, armchair travelers in front of the screen can learn about other countries, even though there is no substitute for just going there. Chances are that many people would love to travel abroad as much as they want, but it is not possible all the time.

In comparison, watching TV or exploring the Internet is a virtual experience while real traveling is a sensory experience.

If people have no plans to physically go anywhere in distant lands, a virtual environment on the screen can be experienced as if they were there. As modern technology is becoming more sophisticated, it is easier than ever before to learn about what a foreign place is like before traveling there, or rather, not traveling there at all. In this regard, TV and the Internet can take armchair travelers to the interesting far-away places where they may never be able to go (or want to), including destinations that are off-limits or dangerous. For that purpose, if some special TV travel channels and Google Maps’ satellite imagery are great tools to help people learn about other countries, why bother seeing the world for real? It is true that many places in foreign countries are worth seeing on the screen, but not necessarily worth going to see.

For real travelers, it is necessary to go abroad in order to learn about other countries because there is no way to fully replace the sensory experience of being on the ground in an exciting travel destination (as seen on TV or online). Obviously, what add up to a full sensory experience are the five human senses of the sights, sounds, tastes, scents and feelings. Indeed, to travel to another country is to magnify all these human senses in such a way that it is different from a virtual sensation experienced by armchair travelers. So, to experience the “real thing” in a distant country, not anyone else can travel for anyone; therefore, real travelers must leave footprints in person. Poetically speaking, with that sensory experience they are not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the Earth.

To conclude, it is one thing to virtually learn about other nations by watching TV shows or surfing on the websites, while it is quite another to have the memory of the “real thing” through traveling abroad. Of course, it is not necessary for all the people to actually travel to all parts of the world all the time. Luckily, these two ways to learn about foreign countries are not mutually exclusive.
