Is ambition a positive or negative characteristic? Is it necessary for success?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples or experience.
Essay:
Ambition alone, without talent and persistence, is fantasy. It is true that big results require big ambitions, but many would succeed in small things if they were not troubled with great ambitions. The ambition that propels one to success can also be one’s unhappiness.
In order to achieve fame, wealth or power, it is necessary for people to have ambitions. In general, people should have a strong desire to succeed and be willing to do what it takes to make success a reality. Having something at heart that they are good at and insist on doing is the path to success. Nothing can stop a talented person with a “never-give-up” attitude from reaching the dreamed objective. Figuratively speaking, ambition is the parent of success in all areas of life as well as the cause of all aspects of human progress. It may be said that right ambitions for right persons are positive because this world needs people who dream impossible things and who have the power to realize sky-high goals that match their special abilities and enduring capacities.
However, ambition may just turn out to be a negative characteristic, in which case a person’s life is a constant source of unhappiness. It is because ambition is not only what people wish to do but also what they are able to do. Without talent and persistence, they cannot get anywhere near success, and that is why many great ambitions would remain no more than the shadows of dreams, as if to say that when ambition ends, happiness begins. Therefore, it had better be aware that not everyone can do everything, and that a wrong ambition is like an expedition in the dark where the sight of success is nowhere. As a warning, it is dangerous for some people to allow ambitions to rule their lives negatively to a series of disappointments.
To summarize, ambition can be a positive or negative thing in life, respectively leading to success or unhappiness. As often as not, many people feel unhappy simply because they have ambitions beyond their reach. For success, ambition is necessary, so are talent and persistence.
