#Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Parents must have strict rules if they want their children to be successful in life.

Use reasons and specific examples or details to support your answer.

#Example Answer (by Jeenn Lee Hsieh ielts360toefl@hotmail.com ):

For a boy or girl to be successful in life, it is better to have strict parenting than permissive parenting. Strict parents are usually strong and loving parents as they put their children's interests foremost. Although there is no such thing as perfect parenting, children are likely to benefit more from those parents who impose strict rules than those who fail to do so.

There are plenty of advantages to strict parenting. One of the most beneficial things is that it often teaches discipline. That discipline is ideal for children and it lasts for a lifetime. If nothing else, this is especially true with regard to academics since discipline is a wise incentive that can induce more studying and less slacking off with school work. By holding their children to high standards and instilling confidence in their future, strict parents demand the best grades, to begin with. As a result, the children tend to perform extremely well at school due to that kind of expectations when they learn that they must make efforts to succeed in any career or deal with the consequences of failure later in life.

However, the question about strict parenting is how strict is strict enough in order to help the young people succeed in life. Contrary to what is anticipated, it is feared that extremely strict rules might ironically cause children to avoid the very parental wisdom which is being sought for the best of their interests. That is to say, strict parenting gone wrong might have its potential to backfire, probably because kids raised too severely, once released, are similar to a tightly pulled rubber band. So, it is possible that strict rules might turn out to be the situation: "out of sight, out of mind". Or in worse cases, it is also possible that strict parenting might cause resentment that could last long into adulthood. Perhaps that is exactly the main psychological reason why these days many parents tend to be permissive with their children.

Equally having the best interests of their children at the heart of the matter, parents can either be too strict or too permissive about rules. It seems that no one knows how to do it perfectly. However, keeping in mind that children will only be young a short while, most parents could have more to expect from their children who are being brought up under strict rules and are intentionally being put on the right track toward a successful life.
