Public transit is a critical aspect of a modern country’s mass transportation network. Should it be free? It is easy to say that the government must do its best to support public transport; but it is difficult to make public transport completely free for all users.

To begin with, there are several reasons why some people say that public transport should be free. Firstly, public transport is a public good, particularly benefitting those who cannot afford to pay for the regular fares. Secondly, it will encourage people out of their cars since growing cities often have traffic jams. Thirdly, because the reliance on the car also leads to large amounts of pollution (both smog and CO2 emissions), free public transport will greatly help the fight against environmental pollution. Fourthly, free public transport is the answer for hard-working people to have more money in their pockets. Finally, free public transport would actually save the government money spent on maintaining the roads because more people would use it instead of driving. In view of these reasons, free public transport is welcome.

However, the idea of making public transport free cannot work healthily without the revenue from fares, unless the government has enough money to burn. It is true that the government funding is necessary, considering that public transport cannot operate without adequate funding. Yet, it is wishful thinking that the government should pay for everything in life from food to clothing to housing to transportation. In the case of mass transit, there is no secret that the income from fares alone is usually insufficient to pay for the operating expenses, let alone the capital costs. As an alternative, perhaps the reductions of prices will make public transport more attractive to people. Strangely, once something is absolutely free, people tend not to value it all that much. Those who think that public transport should be free, think again!

In sum, the idea of free public transport is easier said than done. Without the income from fares, it is impossible to run metros, trams and city buses. While the government funding is indispensable, it does not mean that public transport should be free for anyone who uses it.
