Ambition can drive one to success or harm one's happiness. The tragedy is that so many people have so many ambitions and yet so few have sufficient ability to deliver distinction. A strong desire to rise in the world would be a good trait if it is built on one's great talents and capabilities; otherwise, such burning zeal could become a dangerous thing.
To achieve greatness, fame, power or wealth, it is necessary to have ambitious life-goals that match one's ability. Having something at heart that one is good at and loves to do is the path to success. So. it may be argued that right ambitions are positive as being that kind of stuff which dreams are made of, and nothing can stop one with a strong desire from reaching the dreamed objective. It is hard to deny that ambition is the parent of all enterprise and the cause of all improvement. Such passion is so powerful that, in many cases, success seems almost inevitable. Ambition along with ability matters to success, on the assumption that without ambition one starts nothing, and without ability one finishes nothing.
On the negative side, being over-ambitious for success without being reasonably realistic at the same time is risky, even tragic. Ambition is not only what one wishes to do but also what one can do. With too little capabilities and resources, too many great ambitions would remain the shadow of dreams only. It had better be realized that not everyone can do everything. Unfortunately, some people are endowed with great ambition but little ability for that purpose. More often than not, grand ambitions with the wrong mental attitude stand in the way of small but meaningful accomplishments, and as well become a constant source of disappointment in life.
Ambition has its positive and negative side, depending on the size of one's dream and one's ability to succeed. Whereas a right ambition leads one to achievement, a blind one is like an expedition in the dark, going nowhere. To save or to destroy--that is the question about ambition.
