  Essay by Jeenn Lee Hsieh

  Essay Topic 雅思真题:

Some people think that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefits of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong. What is your opinion?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Example Writing 实验范文:

Is it more wrong to sacrifice animals for medical experiments than to slaughter them for food? Given that human beings are usually practical (and sometimes cruel), preclinical research cannot be practical if purely based on theory without resorting to 'cruel' animal experiments. Our argument is that, for the benefits of human health, the use of animals in medical research matters, whether it is acceptable or not.

On the one hand, animal experimentation has made a crucial contribution to many of the most important advances in modern medicine. For example, decades ago the development of vaccines for deadly viruses, such as rabies and yellow fever, depended on animal experiments. Moreover, much of our practical knowledge about human health was discovered through the use of animals in medical research. This indicates that animal experimentation functions in the laboratory, playing the vital role in eradicating human (and animal) diseases. At this stage, the possibilities of communicable diseases are still immense and may emerge at any time in the future to menace human health. Under these circumstances, failing to defend animal experiments as 'necessary evils' is feared to have disastrous implications.

On the other hand, voices to the contrary have been heard from animal rights activists. In spite of those gains, some people hold the view that the use of animals in medical research is 'morally' wrong. So much so, it should be severely curtailed or eliminated. It is understandable that this opinion draws upon a range of academic and social disciplines focusing on ethical aspects of the issue. That is to say, there is no 'moral' justification for making animals suffer for the betterment of human life. In other words, it is as if to say that animals have rights, too, even though they can neither speak nor vote nor rebel against human 'wrong-doings'.

Overall, right or wrong, it is necessary to use animals for medical experiments to translate the bedside knowledge into practical science so as to benefit human health. Since there is no theory indicating that medical experiments could be conducted on plants instead of animals, the option is only too obvious. This being the case, we may as well think that stopping the use of animals for that purpose would be as difficult as preventing human beings from consuming animal food like chicken sandwich or pork soup or beefsteak.
