  Topic:

  In some countries, the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness are decreasing. What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

  Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

  So many people, men and women alike, just get tired of being overweight and unfit, and they think they are judged and they know that they are fat. The causes of overweight (and obesity) seem varied and complex, but they are mainly related to eating too much and lack of regular physical activities. What measures, then, could be taken to encourage overweight people to reverse the negative trend?

  Poor diet and sedentary behavior have led to the fact that the average weight of people is going up and their levels of health and fitness are declining. To begin with bad eating style, the larger factor is over-consumption in a relatively affluent society which identifies consumption with economic wellbeing and assigns social status to how much people consume, and it is as if they compete with one another to see who can consume the most, not being aware of the fact that they become what they eat. Actually, what they eat may be mostly fake foods (fast food and junk food) that are making them fat. To make things worse, most overweight and obese people are those who do not exercise on a regular basis. Lack of physical activity is no doubt a major contributor to being unfit and unhealthy, let alone being unattractive and stressed.

  Fixing overweight (and obesity) is going to require a change in people’s lifestyles associated with eating habits and physical activities. On the one hand, people should be encouraged to eat more fruits, vegetables and whole grains instead of fake foods. Nowadays, fast food and junk food are more affordable, enticing people to eat more and more unhealthy stuff almost compulsorily, so they must refrain of from eating too much. On the other hand, since lack of doing exercise can often result in overweight and unfitness, people should make it a rule to be more physically active—walking, biking, running, hiking, skiing, swimming, visiting gyms, playing sports, etc. At this point, it must be mentioned that surfing long the Webs, socializing long online, or sitting long in front of the TV screen are not called “physical activities”. In sum, what with eating right and what with enough exercise, people can upgrade their levels of health and fitness.

  If the overweight along with obesity problems remain unchecked, it is likely to condemn unhealthy and unfit people to shorter lives. To live longer, there is an urgent need for individuals to resort to eating right and doing exercise as effective ways to be in good shape. Being fat is not fate; therefore, people who are struggling with overweight (and obese) issues but who do not want to change their lifestyles have only themselves to blame.
