For today’s teenagers, no free time is better spent than that spent in the unpaid community service of people who are in need. They should be encouraged to do some selfless service for a noble cause as a compulsory part of extra-curriculum activities. It makes social and educational sense to render more and better service than is expected of them, no matter what the task may be.

All secondary-school students should be necessarily required to do unpaid work to make the society a better place. There are typical kinds of programs organized by high schools to illustrate the kindness and generosity of teenagers at whatever work that asks for nothing in return. For one, an amount of service on their part for charity can be helpful to the poor, the weak and the sick. For another, in every community, there is always work undone; and in this respect, no act of improving the neighborhood, no matter how small, is ever wasted. For still another, teaching sports to younger people is also social work worth doing well for the common wellbeing in the society. In short, every sort of service beneficial to the society becomes noble by being necessary.

Unpaid community service makes educational sense for high-school students in that they can gain important knowledge that cannot be learned in the classroom or from a textbook. As an educational experience, every service is memorable because it is not only an act of a noble cause but also an act of love for other people. Educationally speaking, teenagers can grow up to be mentally stronger than ever, knowing that they are capable of doing worthy work. In addition, teenagers are given the opportunity to understand human relationships and discover human vulnerabilities. And at the same time they are able to learn problem-solving skills by meeting face-to-face with the urgent problems. In view of these educational benefits, what is seen as noble unpaid work can turn out to be rewarding.

In conclusion, from social and educational perspectives, some unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high-school programs for teenagers. There are all kinds of work to be done, so high-school students must have the heart to do it. It is the service that they are not paid to give that people value most.
