Topic:
These days, an increasing number of people do no know their neighbors, and there is no longer a sense of community. What do you think are the causes of this situation? Can you suggest some solutions? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge and experience.

When one neighbor helps another, people strengthen their communities. A sense of community is as important today as it always was, if only to cope with the rising crime rates in newly-established urban communities. Given that the security of community is desirable, why neighbors do not know each other, and what can be done to strengthen a strong sense of community?
There are likely causes why an increasing number of people, particularly young adults, do not feel the need to know people living next door. To begin with, it is possible that nowadays most working people tend to be self-centered and do not know their neighbors, let alone trusting them. It is also possible that working people could not afford to spend time in gossiping about weather, dogs and new babies, in a similar way that traditional neighbors used to do in the old-fashioned community spirit. This situation becomes especially obvious due mainly to modern housing plans. In some cases, neighbors do not know people who are living near them because families are either ‘caged’ like animals in department units or are separated by walls usually two meters high. That is to say, neighbors appear to be at once so near and yet so far away. As a result, there is no longer that sense of community which is closely related to a sense of security in the neighborhood. It is as if neighbors are acting like strangers.
Under these circumstances, neighbors need to change the attitude of their mutual indifference and instead to begin watching each other’s back. As modern society is increasingly being threatened by rising crimes, people should be more concerned about the security of their community; and for that matter, they should know their neighbors in the first place. One practical suggestion is for government to encourage neighbors to participate in a what is called Citizens Neighborhood Watch Program to make it more difficult for bandits to perpetuate a crime nearby. By so doing, people in the same community can not only know each other but also create the bondage of friendship, and thus keep intruders away. Since the absence of a sense of community is a dangerous thing, it is imperative to have friendly neighbors to report suspicious activities to police who can handle the crooks. Mutual help is indispensable, considering that the impersonal hand of government can never replace the helping hand of a neighbor.
In conclusion, because the security of community is desirable, people should know next-door neighbors and care for them. A traditional sense of community should be introduced to new new neighborhoods. But that sense of community can only be reinforced when people know their neighbors.
