  Topic:

Countries are becoming more and more similar because people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world. Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

Obviously because of global globalization, there is an increasing intermingling of international businesses and each country is learning more about products of other countries. It can be seen in particular that people are able to buy the same products anywhere in the world; and as a result, countries are becoming more and more similar. This phenomenon has both positive and negative effects.

To begin with, globalization has changed the outlook of those countries which become more and more similar in terms of the availability of the identical consumer products. It is a good to see that the world is becoming increasingly interconnected as a result of massively growing trade. Nowadays, consumers across the world can gain the opportunities of enjoying the same fruits of globalization in such aspects as eating, drinking, clothing, entertaining, and so on. For example, the biggest companies like McDonalds and Starbucks are no longer national firms but multinational corporations with subsidiaries selling identical products in many countries. This and other examples are illustrations of the benefits of globalization, therefore consumers at large think that similarities in countries are a positive development, thanks to the free interplay of supply and demand through transporting products beyond borders in weeks, days or hours.

However, when countries are becoming more and more similar because people can buy the same products anywhere, there is a loss of each country’s identity of lifestyle in the cultural context. Therefore, from the cultural perspective, globalization is homogenizing tastes in consumption and destroying a country’s diversity in lifestyle, as if to turn countries into one world culture. Since the present era has pushed this trend to a great extent, the similar lifestyle due to the availability of the same international products have caused this to happen. For instance, in what is called “cultural imperialism,”, people are under the influence of American film and television shows that have corrosive effects on local cultures by highlighting Western notions of beauty and fitness, and in turn this influence may lead consumers to buy the same products as shown on the screen. In other words, that countries are becoming similar is a negative development.

In conclusion, there are pros and cons about countries becoming increasingly similar because people can buy the same products anywhere in the world. Globalization is likely to standardize lifestyle in many countries. The consumer products being the same, it will become rather hard to tell one country from another in this respect.
