  Topic:

Some people think that employers should not care about the way their employees dress, because what matters is the quality of their work. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay: Simon

In the modern workplace, dress codes are changing as employers focus more on results than on the rules that employees must follow. While I agree that the way people dress should be seen as irrelevant in many work contexts, I believe that dress codes still exist for good reason in certain professions.

On the one hand, many employers have stopped telling their staff how to dress, and I see this as a positive trend. Some of the most successful companies in the world, including technology giants like Google and Facebook, are famous for the relaxed office environments that they try to create. Employees are encouraged to dress casually, and even the company executives and leaders are rarely seen wearing anything other than T-shirts and jeans. However, while managers and programmers are free to dress how they like, they are expected to produce work of outstanding quality. It is clear from the performance and global dominance of such companies that strict dress codes are completely unnecessary in the technology sector.

However, I would also argue that rules regarding employees’ clothing are still relevant in other work situations. We expect certain professionals, such as nurses, police officers and airline pilots, to wear uniforms. These uniforms may have a practical or safety function, but perhaps more importantly they identify the person’s position or role in society. Similarly, a lawyer, a politician or school principal may choose to wear formal clothing in order to portray an image of authority, trustworthiness and diligence. I believe that most of us prefer to see these professionals in smart, formal attire, even if it is not strictly necessary.

In conclusion, I support the trend towards relaxed dress codes for workers, but I do not see it as applicable to all occupations or sectors of the economy. (298 words, band 9)

  IELTS Writing Task 2

  Topic:

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

  Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that employers should not be concerned about the way their employees dress, but they should be concerned about the quality at work. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

  解析与思路:

建议一个词汇:A dress code: the way employees are asked to dress in the workplace

  一种可行的答题结构:introduction, Body A, Body B, Conclusion

1.引言段 Employers should be more concerned about the quality at work than about the way their employees dress because, although wearing a uniform may promote a corporate image, establishing a dress code is mixed with benefits and drawbacks.

2.中体A The possible benefits of having a dress code as a corporate image, in relation to the quality of work

3.中体B. The possible drawbacks of having a dress code, in relation to the quality of work.

4.结论段 A dress code is mixed with benefits and drawbacks. Although wearing a uniform may promote a corporate image, employers are more concerned about the quality at work than the way their employees dress.

  Essay:

Apart from being concerned mainly about employees’ quality of work, employers should also pay attention to the image of the organizations. It is interesting to discuss whether the corporate image may find expression in the way their employees dress which might or might not be related to quality at work. For that matter, the focus is on the possible benefits and drawbacks of establishing a dress code in the workplace.

Some people believe that it is beneficial to have a dress code in the workplace, if only for image reasons. Employees are supposed to work effectively and efficiently for better quality of work, of course; but they are expected to further enhance the the organization’s image, too. Workers may be asked to wear a uniform to communicate a corporate image and ensure that people can easily identify them. This is particularly true of a workplace in which employees have regular face-to-face contact with customers and clients. For this reason, nowadays an increasing number of workplaces prefer to set up a dress code and subtly promote the visual uniformity along with the quality of work. In view of this, while it is hard say to what extent visual uniformity is related to quality at work, having a dress code in place may help the way a corporation wants to be perceived, but it would not make or break the employees’ working quality.

However, some people think that employers should be concerned, above all, about the quality at work due to some downsides to having a strict dress code. One of the biggest downsides is that it can stifle individuality since workers are not given total freedom to demonstrate their personal styles. It is as if to picture a stereotypical startup workplace versus a traditional corporate workplace; one is likely lively and flowing with variety and creativity and the other is more or less boring and mundane. Sometimes some employees tend to complain that a dress code may seem like a bit too much, leading to feelings of stress among themselves. It is feared that in the long run, a dress code can lead to plummeting employee effectiveness and efficiency, or quality of work. At this point, it is not known for certain if a dress code is indeed useful to upgrade to the quality of work, nor is it certain if the contrary is true.

In conclusion, employers should be concerned about the quality at work, but whether a dress code makes sense for a workplace is a question only employers can answer. It seems that the image of a corporation is complimentary rather than contradictory to the quality of work. When having the quality of work in mind, it is every employer’s judgement on whether the way the employees dress may have logical connection with the image of an organization.
