Some people say that history is one of the most important school subjects. Other people think that, in today’s world, subjects like science and technology are more important than history.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Essay:
Today’s education seems to value the dreams of the future over the memory of the past. It is clear that school subjects like science and technology are given more importance than history. It is true that students need to be scientifically and technologically literate to succeed in school and beyond, but history should always have a place in the school curriculum.
In schools, young people need to study science and technology and nurture the advanced skills necessary to build a dynamic economy for a brighter future. It has often been said that science and technology are the key to the economic future, so the more students are attracted to science and technology, the more economic opportunities there will be. Those skills learned in schools are integral to every aspect of a student’s education and career life. It is because through studying the subjects of science and technology, students are taught to think and solve problems and make informed decisions in the workplace. In comparison, the role of science and technology in education is more important than that of history as a school subject since the former is looking forward to the future while the latter is looking back into the past.
Then, why is history education taught in today’s schools? To begin with, the study of history enables students to understand how past human activities affect the present and influence the future, and such study of change and development over time allows young people to evaluate these effects in a disciplined way. Thus, students should be aware that a generation which ignores history has no past, no present, and no future; and that history is not a burden on the memory but rather an illumination of the present and the future. It is also necessary for them to realize that those who want the present to be different from the past must study the past, and those who want to understand today have to search yesterday. Being a school subject, history is very unlike science and technology that stress innovation for the future since history usually repeats itself and never says goodbye but says, ‘See you later.’
In the economic context, school subjects like science and technology appear to be more important than history. However, young people should not abandon the memory of the past because it is a tool to mirror the present and the future. From time to time, people must never stop dreaming for the future while remembering the past.
