  剑桥雅思12: 谢振礼范文 大小决定

  IELTS Writing Task 2

  Cambridge IELTS 12

  Topic:

Some people believe that allowing children to make their own choices on everyday matters (such as food, clothes and entertainment) is likely to result in a society of individuals who only think about their own wishes. Other people believe that it is important for children to make decisions about matters that affect them.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

Should children be allowed to make decisions for themselves, and to what extent? Generally speaking, parents should let children make decisions on their own for everyday matters; but for more important matters, parents should insist on calling the shot. It is up to parents when to say “yes” and when to say “no” to their children.

There are times when parents had better let their children make decisions about matters that are less important. For example, if their children prefer to have a certain meal for breakfast, then why do not parents give them the freedom to choose what they want to eat? This kind of freedom may apply not only to food but also clothes and entertainment since these everyday matters do not affect children seriously. In this particular sense, it is groundless to fear that children are likely to become individuals who simply think about their wishes. In a wider sense, decision making is a critical skill, so allowing children to make their own choices is part of maturity process. If parents never let their children make their own decisions, then the children will probably never be able to make decisions later in life.

However, there are other times when parents need to set boundaries that limit their children in making decisions on their own about more important matters. By so doing, parents can help their children grow up in a healthy lifestyle, go on the right path, and not make wrong decisions which would lead to serious consequences. Generally speaking, when parents make decisions for their children, they will never tell them to do wrong. That is why children should be guided in the right direction. After all, parents are their children’s caretakers, and they have all the right to make decisions for their children who should always obey them.

In conclusion, parents should continue playing the role of commanders-in-chief in the family, dictating orders. Children should be given the “green light” to make decisions for themselves to a certain limit. Beyond that limit is “red light”.
