  Cambridge IELTS 12

  Topic:

Some people believe that it is good to share as much information as possible in scientific research, business and academic world. Others believe that some information is too important or too valuable to be shared freely.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

  Essay:

When it comes to sharing information, a controversy arises as to how much is enough. Open access to data is regarded as critical to progress; however, there are risks of losing a competitive edge if sensitive or confidential information is not restricted. It is one thing to share openly, while it is quite another to be able to compete successfully in the academic, business and scientific fields.

Why should information be open? It is mainly because making research results open to others can contribute to transparency, innovation and efficiency. To begin with, whether for academia, business or science, making data openly available increases transparency in the sense that the results of scholarly research can be disseminated more widely and rapidly for public eyes. Further, making information accessible can enhance the potential of the research data and can also open up possibilities for innovations. Further still, sharing data openly can reduce duplication of effort and resources, thus efficiently saving other researchers’ need to gather the same information again. In view of these benefits, it is believed by some people that it is good to share as much information as possible.

Nevertheless, other people believe that some information is simply too sensitive or too confidential to be shared freely when competition is the game. So as to become the forerunner, researchers may feel uncomfortable about, even afraid of making their important data openly available to competitors. Interestingly, being second is being last since there is literally no second in academia. Likewise, competition prevails in the business circle where valuable information, if disclosed, could harm a company’s commercial interests, such as customer lists, production formulas and trade secrets. More obviously, the desire to compete in scientific research field is so strong that sharing important information is next to impossible. That is why scientists are restricted in revealing their research results, even though they know that science advances only if information is shared.

As a conclusion, it is good to share information openly as long as the competitive advantage is not being lost. So, sharing secret information is probably not the wise thing to do. Enough is enough because sharing had better mean giving information openly without losing competition.
