Nowadays an increasing number of children suffer from excessive overweight, and this health problem, once considered to be meant for adults only, is getting worse in many parts of the world. For that matter, at least parents and the authorities involved must join forces in encouraging young people to lead a healthy lifestyle, such as eating less fat and doing more physical activities. Childhood obesity has its causes and effects, both of which need to be further studied together in order to find more solutions.

Several reasons can explain to some extent why a high percentage of children turn out to be obese. To begin with, overeating is a very common cause, especially if the diet is rich in fat. In this regard, most nutrition experts are pointing their fingers at the tasty but unhealthy fast food or junk food being advised on television and other media outlets. As well, those who lead an inactive lifestyle with minimal physical exercise tend to gain weight and ultimately enlarge their waistlines, so to speak. While these main causes may seem obvious, medical experts have also identified the hidden role genetics may play in the rise of obesity in children. To illustrate this kind of inheritance, if one or both parents suffer from obesity, then there are increased chances (up to 50 percent) that their offsprings would become obese, too.

Whatever the cause or causes of childhood obesity might be, the results are always negative, both physically and psychologically. Among other symptoms that affect the body, overweight children may develop diabetes when they reach adulthood, or earlier. According to doctors, being obese interrupts the functioning of the hormone which is responsible for regulating blood sugar. Another bad sign may be high blood pressure on the heart, often making it difficult for a victim of obesity to draw enough oxygen for the tissues and cells in the body. In addition, hardening of the arteries is not uncommon in people suffering from obesity due to the deposition of fat along the walls of blood vessels. As if the problem were not serious enough, obese kids are psychologically losing their self-esteem, and so much so, probably becoming ashamed of their physical appearances and easily falling victims to bullying from peers.

The main causes and effects of obesity which has become a major disease prevalent among children require both government attention and parental concern, constantly having their best interests at heart. Young people should be taught to consume less fat and to lead an active lifestyle at the same time as one possible way of preventing and getting rid of obesity. Failing that, the situation of childhood overweight could only go from bad to worse. (essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh ielts360toefl@163.com)
