Example Writing

The mass media's enormous emphasis of violent crimes does not make all of us criminals; rather, it does urge us to accept a kind of world in which such things happen. On the other hand, although the news about violent crimes may give rise to people's fear of crimes, there is no evidence to suggest relationships between the crime rates and the media consumption.  To put it simply, these types of news are exactly to inform and enlighten the public rather than to increase crime rates.

Public knowledge of crime, and along with it the criminal justice system, is largely derived from the media.  Psychologically, the society in general is fascinated with crime news.  It can be seen in the way people are constantly engaging in "crime talk" in everyday conversation.  This is of course a reflection of the influence of media consumption on fear of crime.  Such phenomenon is largely a positive development because people need to know the world as it is, be it violent or otherwise.  On the contrary, nothing is worse than being ignorant of the reality that society has many faces--good, bad and ugly.

People actually learn the complexity of various kinds of crime and punishment, through news reporting in newspapers, on TV and other media outlets.  Day in and day out, the public is creating spiritual and intellectual insights into the cause and effect of crime, case by case.  There is nothing wrong to be educated in the construction of criminality and criminal justice system. In fact, such lessons are taught as sometimes life is like property to be defended, and as high crime rates are part of the price we pay for freedom, and as people are not intrinsically violent. In other words, such information of crime and justice as well as worry or even terror of crime is far from an illusion.

After all, the news about violent crimes has little to do with the rise and fall of crime rates in society and by no means encourages the average person to commit a crime.  Jokingly, if falling crime rates coincide with the high sales of violent video games and increasing violence in newspapers and TV, should we conclude that the media violence is causing a drop in crime rates? Who is kidding who? (Essay created by Jeenn Lee Hsieh ielts360toefl@hotmail.com pigai zuowen)
