  IELTS Essay Topic:

  >More and more people are seriously overweight. Some people say that the price increase of fattening foods will solve this problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

  Jeenn Lee Hsieh 实验范文:

Belly inflation and market inflation are two things a world apart, each without having the other in mind. Obesity is a health problem caused largely by the habit of eating fattening foods whose prices have nothing to do with the solution. The price increase of those foods associated with overweight can only shorten the depth of consumers' pockets, but not their waistlines.

As a solution to obesity, stress needs to be reduced because stress is the main cause of bad eating habits. As can be expected, the practice of raising the price of fattening foods may just turn out to be a financial stress, invariably prompting hungry-minded fatties to satisfy their stomachs. It is obvious that obese people do not enjoy enough inexpensive fresh fruits and vegetables as frequently as they should. Instead, they are more inclined to buy a variety of meat and milk products as well as chemically processed foods, all rich in fat and anything but cheap. This means that the price factor is irrelevant in changing people's eating style. Or in other words, eating as a habit is an addiction like cocaine, so the increased price of fattening foods contributes merely to stress, and is certainly not a solution.

For obese people, just modifying the diet alone is not the solution to bring down their weight. It is because a balanced diet is independent of the price influence in a financially polarized society. On an economic scale, people in the lower-class rather than the upper-class sector happen to be the ones who suffer more from the disease. This goes to show that should certain foods be artificially made more expensive to buy, the society's less fortunate people would have no alternative but eat in a even more unhealthy way--probably surviving on nothing more than white breads with salty margarine, day in and day out. Accordingly, the idea of price increase is in nobody's favor.

In sum, the price increase of fattening foods as a remedy for obesity is as bad as the disease. Any effective solution might not be related to the market price, for that matter. The best things to do in order to become physically fit are almost free, such as fasting once a week, and doing regular exercise.
