  14804 Father

  IELTS Writing Task 2 猫头鹰在线写作实验室

Essay Question: Like Father Like Son, Like Mother Like Daughter

Example Answer by Jeenn Lee Hsieh ielts360toefl@hotmail.com

  Writing Topic:

  >Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Boys are most influenced by their fathers and girls are most influenced by their mothers. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience to support your opinion.

Sample Writing (Jeenn Lee Hsieh 谢振礼老师):

Guess that your answer is yes and no: 'Yes' because indeed girls are most influenced by their mothers, and 'no' because boys are not so much influenced by their fathers. As if a joke regarding behavioral tendencies, the problem with most boys is that nowadays they are very unlike their fathers whereas the problem with most girls is that they remain too much like their mothers. Thus, the proverb "like father, like son" and its counterpart "like mother, like daughter" need to be examined separately.

Referring to the phrase "like mother, like daughter", some people say that daughters tend to do what their mothers did before them. For one thing, a mother and a daughter can be so much alike that they often become best friends, doing such things as shopping and cooking and bathing and what not together. Further, both being women who are similar in behavior, they would admire each other at one point and be jealous of each other at another point. Sadly, no other example is more typical than the familial patterns of overweight as linked to the eating habit and energy balance. In fact, it is not uncommon to see that behind every obese girl is usually an obese mother. That said, do you want more evidence to prove that a mother is always an inspiration or a role model for her daughter?

By contrast, too often the same influence is far from being true of fathers over their boys. Perhaps, you may use "like father, like son" specifically to describe the behavioral tendencies that seem like identical but are not actually so. In career choice, for instance, there is no denying that a boy is likely to step in his father's footprints, but just as likely a boy may refuse to follow suit. True enough, nowadays you cannot fail to see that father-son relationships are not always at peace. In most cases, at issue is that the son may not live up to the father's high expectations, resulting in a range of conflicts in the family. In other words, chances now are that fathers no longer have great influence on their sons in determining what their boys should do or should not do in the future.

In conclusion, it is true that most daughters are like their mothers; however, the same may not necessarily apply to behavioral tendencies between father and son. On the one hand, girls are always girls, like their mothers before them. On the other hand, you simply cannot expect every boy to become like his father who is apparently losing the fatherly influence.
