  Essay Prompt:

The costs of international travel are decreasing and tourism is growing. What are the advantages and disadvantages of increasing tourism activity in different countries? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience to support your opinion.

Example Essay A (Jeenn Lee Hsieh 谢振礼):

It can be seen that nowadays the international tourism thrives in part on cheaper air traveling. The growing tourism is beneficial to many countries, despite a few undesirable consequences. The increasing number of visitors from one place to another beyond borders can create more cash income and increase employment opportunities in many host countries.

More than anything else, tourism is about making money. Encouraged by affordable air fares, the tourism industry has become a vital economic lifeblood of many countries such as France, Egypt, Greece, United States, Spain, Italy and Thailand, to name a few. Whether for leisure or business or other purposes, visitors spend money and hence help activate a local economy. Reportedly, there are around 100 million international travelers annually, which means billions of dollars being made by tourism-related sectors, including of course passenger airliners. It is doubtless that the decreasing costs of international travel brings an increasing number of visitors to any tourist-friendly country. Whereas it would be good for tourism, tourism is also good for generating foreign money.

With the advent of cheaper air traveling and more tourist arrivals, it is logical to produce more job opportunities in any place of tourist interest. Various kinds of service industries flourish. Besides airliners, other transportation services ranging from cruise ships to taxicabs can provide more jobs. So can hospitality services such as hotels and resorts, as well as entertainment venues, including amusement parks, casinos, shopping malls and theaters. As the business of tourism is to provide essential services to tourism, there are things to be done, like improving infrastructure and protecting environment, among others. That certainly can contribute to more employment as well.

The importance of tourism is inevitably associated with making money and creating jobs, even though some cases turn out to be disagreeable. Unfortunately, more airplanes are polluting the air because of the fast-growing global traveling, and as a result, many popular sight-seeing locations are negatively affected culturally, ecologically or even morally. True enough, cheaper air traveling can give an agreeable sensation that the map is no longer the territory, regardless of some disagreeable things, and yet ironically sometimes there is nothing so disagreeable as the irresponsible visitors. Tourism is often touted as an industry that will never shrink in size. In other words, as the world develops, more and more people will be able to travel. Although many may see this as a positive phenomenon, it is not a trend without drawbacks. Both the advantages and disadvantages of this topic will be analyzed before a reasoned conclusion is reached.

On the one hand, the reduction in travel fare and the increasing of global tourism can be seen as a positive event as it promotes intercultural understanding and global harmony. For example, many Middle Eastern states have opened their doors and embraced tourism over the last twenty years and this has helped shed prejudiced views internationally that all Middle Eastern countries are dangerous. This development clearly shows the benefits of an increasing international tourism industry.

In addition to this, tourism creates new opportunities for trade. For example, many Chinese tourists are bringing back products from foreign countries that are currently unavailable in China. These new trade ties are great for the health of the entire global economy and can be seen as yet another positive ramification resulting from increased tourism.

On the other hand, the international tourism industry does pose some disadvantages. For one, money travelling into countries through tourism can lead to the establishment of some morally questionable activity. To name a few, tourist hotspots in developing countries are often rife with theft problems, maimed beggars and prostitution. The inflaming of these issues as a result of increased tourism is an obvious disadvantage to the growing global travel industry.

Following this analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of tourism and the falling travel prices that are making it more possible, it is felt tourism has more benefits than drawbacks. It is hoped the growth in global intercultural understanding continues uninterrupted as tourism increases.
