It is generally agreed that children can benefit more in the future from learning academic subjects than non-academic subjects. As a typical rule, less school time should be given to non-academic subjects like physical education, arts, and music, and more school hours should be spent on such academic subjects as maths, physics, chemistry, biology, history, geography and language. However, this does not mean that non-academic subjects are not important at all, nor that such extra-academic courses should be removed from the syllabus so that students could concentrate entirely on academic subjects.

All factors considered, academic achievements surpass non-academic abilities in their influence particularly on children who are planning to have a higher education. It may be said that traditional subjects are routes to university, then to future careers. Maths and sciences are important for engineering and medicine, for example. Further, native language being essential, learning English as a foreign language is almost a must in a world increasingly being globalized. History, on the other hand, teaches students to understand the past and even help solve present and future problems. Likewise, learning geography will lead children to be aware of the planet and its features that have great impact on human beings.

Non-academic subjects are also important, curiously, at least for one academic reason. That is to say that non-academic subjects also matter to academic learning, especially as they relate to extra-curricular activities participated by students. It is a known fact that children with better academic success like sports, enjoy music and/or appreciate arts. And it has also been reported that more than half of high school students who took part in physical activities sponsored by schools happened to be mostly 'good' students . Based on the same report, about 40 percent and 25 percent who joined the music clubs or art clubs, respectively, performed at the better-than-the-average level academically. In short, non-academic subjects should not be removed from schools.

In conclusion, it is not that non-academic subjects are as important as academic subjects at school, but that non-academic subjects also play a valuable role. Schools should place much more emphasis on teaching academic subjects because they are of greater benefit to children in the future. One thing, however, is sure: non-academic subjects do no harm.
