  13844 Gender

  IELTS Writing Task 2

Essay Topic: Gender Difference in Workplaces

Example Answer by Jeenn Lee Hsieh

  IELTS Writing Topic:

Some people think that men and women have different qualities. Therefore, some certain jobs are suitable for me and some certain jobs are suitable for women. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience to support your opinion.

  Sample Essay (Jeenn Lee Hsieh):

Because men and women have different biological qualities, they should only do what they do best, respectively. The gender issue, in terms of job opportunities and income disparities, must take its natural course. By nature those jobs more associated with the charm belong to females, and those jobs demanding more strength belong to males.

Due to their charm, women are superior to men in caring and nurturing and other jobs related to domesticity. Furthermore, women's charm abounds in the fields of administrative and secretarial workplace, now with females outnumbering males about four to one. Nowadays, the figure of female presidents and prime ministers, as well as that of business managers and senior officials, is also up and rising. As it is, there is no way to stop women from replacing men in whatever jobs in which talents and abilities are concerned and strength is not essential. If at this time there are still more men in charge, it is probably because women have other jobs no less valuable to do for the society and the family. Born women, they may leave their jobs or labor force when they become pregnant which of course is a natural part of their charm.

In comparison, men have traditionally been viewed as the breadwinners or workers, thanks to their strength. Even in modern societies, men's macho-image remains active and aggressive, thus standing stronger than the "weak sex". Males are always males, meaning that some certain jobs are more suitable for men than for women. At this point, it is worth mentioning that, as charming as they are, women need not apply for jobs as miners, firefighters, sailors, butchers and the like. Generally speaking, such kind of gender stereotype that is overwhelmingly in favor of males is largely acceptable to females, too. Jokingly, by making the best of their charm rather than strength, women are usually capable of using men to do what they want.

On balance, the important point is that men and women are happy in different roles in the society, even though there are obvious or hidden inequalities between the two genders in the workplace. Given that all people are created equal, they have different missions, nevertheless. Apparently nature is fair to both: just as charm is women's strength, strength is men's charm.
