  Essay:

The food travel debate is inevitably intertwined between economic interests and environmental concerns. While food is traveling because transport has become so cheap in a world of globalization, the manner by which food is being carried is not doing the natural environment any favors. Generally speaking, this trend is positive economically and negative environmentally.

On the positive side, because people like to eat a variety of food that can be grown in other areas, it is necessary to link food with transportation, which brings about various economic interests. If nothing else, the ability to transport cheaply has given rise to business boom regarding freight by land, sea and air. Nowadays, all kinds of food may be carried long distances from producing regions to consumer markets in a matter of weeks, days or even hours. Such is a win-win trade practice, benefiting both sellers who can help create more jobs and buyers who can help supply consumers with more food varieties at more affordable prices. At this point, commercial globalization seems to be positive at its best, justifying in part why today’s food may need to travel thousands of miles before it reaches customers. And this also explains why in many countries people eat more food from far-away regions.

Of course, the negative side is chiefly about pollution to the environment. The environmental impact of transportation is just too great to be ignored, referring to big trucks, huge ships and giant airplanes that are used to carry a variety of food use fossil fuels. Fuel burning has become so excessive that pollution from transportation accounts for no small a part of those emissions which are believed to generate greenhouse effects that eventually cause the Earth’s climate to change. Relatively, the longer the distance the food travels, the fuel consumption of the transportation vessels will also be greater, and no doubt the more serious the negative impact on the environment. For that matter, while global food markets successfully allow for food to be produced everywhere and sent everywhere, the economic world at large may become a victim of its own success due to increased pollution. This being the case, consumers should as well be aware of the environmental costs of eating food from other areas.

In conclusion, the globalization of food is positive economically and negative environmentally. In spite of the economic benefits of food travel, the environment is increasingly being polluted. It is a matter of opinions whether or not the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
