  TOEFL Essay Prompt:

What are some important qualities of a good supervisor or boss? Use specific examples and details (based on your knowledge or experience) to support your answer.

  Jeenn Lee Hsieh's Example Answer:

Most supervisors or bosses have something in common: they are self-conscious and self-centered about how important they think they are in the workplace. More often than not, this kind of leadership seems to be linked to those communication skills which tend to tell them apart from ordinary staffers. Strange perhaps but largely true, the two most outstanding qualities of being a leader are speaking more and speaking louder.

In different degrees, talking more sounds like communicating better--a key quality that any leader cannot afford to do without. Whatever being the purpose, doing more of the talking is often a means to an end. For example, by speaking more than necessary, a leader appears to have more options to deal with an issue, however small the issue is. Besides, these days possessing more opinions and ideas is likely to be considered as intelligence, if not exactly wisdom. For that matter, the unfailing formula is to present a solo show at any chance. As a result, after everything has been said, nobody else can have anything to add or comment.

As well, leadership may mean, to coin a new word, 'loudership', particularly when a supervisor or boss wants to impress everybody at sight. Believe it or not, speaking with a high tone all the time more than anybody else may just turn out to be another characteristic of being a superior. Curiously, a leader with a loud voice always carries more weight. So, it does not really matter so much what is said as how it is said. This being the case, there is usually more sound than sense to it. At any event, the roaring voice of a supervisor or boss, like the powerful sound of the thunder, cannot be ignored.

On the whole, it is hard to define leadership in the workplace, but it is easy to recognize the fact that a supervisor or boss would like to talk more and speak louder. After all, communication skills are an integral part of leadership. With these two characteristics, an ordinary leader always enjoys being heard and admired in the spotlight.
