  Honesty makes a difference

  One possible version:

  Honesty makes a difference

“Who did this?” asked my teacher once more. She seldom became angry, but she was this time. She held up a piece of broken glass and asked, “Who broke this window?”

I was the one who broke the window. I had not meant to do it. It was caused by an inaccurate throw of a basketball. If I admitted it, I would be in a lot of trouble. How would I be able to pay for a big window like that? I didn’t even get an allowance.“My father is going to have a fit,” I thought. I didn’t want to raise my hand. But then a force much stronger than me changed my mind. I had to tell the truth.

I couldn’t believe what happened the next day! My teacher went to my desk with a book I was longing for and said, “You will not be punished as long as you remember that I am not rewarding you for your misdeed, but for your honesty.”

The book is gone and all that remains of that day is my memory and the lesson my teacher taught me!

  Conversation 1

M: Lily, what time is it?

  W: Don’t worry. It’s at least a 40-minute wait.

  M: I hate waiting. Should I buy a magazine?

W: Good idea. Get one for me too.

  Conversation 2

W: There will be an exam tomorrow.

  M: Ah? Really? That stinks!

W: Haha, April Fool’s! Did you forget what day it is today?

M: Wow, you were pulling our leg all along. I was really fooled.

W: Alright, now let’s be serious. Actually...you’ll take an exam today.

  M: What?...

  Conversation 3

M: What do you think of that swimming pool?

W: I think it’s pretty good, very large.

M: How about the water? Is it clean?

W: Of course. Also, patrons are provided with flotation devices, swimming goggles, and other equipment.

M: The trainers are also very cute, right?

W: Yeah! That’s one of the reasons I go there.

  Conversation 4

W: Hi, do you guys make special order cakes?

M: We do. First, you should choose a cake you like, tell us what you want written on it, and then we’ll see if it’s possible.

W: I want something that doesn’t have chocolate...maybe vanilla crème and fruit?

M: Is this for a party or... ?

  W: Yeah, it’s for a big party.

M: This cake serves 20 and has strawberries inside.

  W: That’s just what I need.

  Conversation 5

W: Have you heard that our school’s drama club is going to take in new members?

M: Really? I heard that it hadn’t done that for years.

W: Yes, but it said it would accept a lot this year.

M: So can we apply for it?

W: Sure. Anyone can apply if you like.

M: Terrific. That only happens once in a blue moon.

W: Let’s go and sign up!

  Conversation 6

W:Welcome to NHN Group. First, let me go over what we do in the department during a typical workday.

M:OK. I understand that we basically work from nine to six, with an hour-long lunch break from 12 to 1, right?

  W:That’s right.

M:How often do you have meetings?

W:You should attend a department meeting every Friday morning. There are other meetings for people working together on certain projects.

M:Fine. Salaries are paid directly into our bank accounts, aren’t they?

  W:That’s right.

M:I’ve met some colleagues already. I’m sure we’ll get along well with each other.

W:OK. This is your cubicle. Get yourself settled and then I’ll introduce you to some of the others.

  SECTION B

Are you worried about exams? Do you feel stressed by so many quizzes? In the near future, you may be able to take a pill and forget your worries.

US scientists say they have the technology to remove painful memories. It works on a protein that is important for memory formation. With the technology, scientists can remove certain memories from mice, without hurting their brains.

“The technology can help people to remove fears and unhappy memories,” said lead researcher Dr Joe Tsien. “It could help many people live better lives.”

However, the tests were only done on mice. Human brains are far more complicated. Scientists say it could be years before they use the technology on humans.
