ABOUT THE FORUM

Climate change is leading to the exposure of hundreds of millions of people to water stress; an increase in the numbers of species at risk and vast ecosystem changes, as well as increased damages due to floods and extreme weather events. But climate change is not just an environmental issue; it influences many other social and economic factors, such as poverty, health and economic development.

Ten years ago, few people in the business world could see the link between their operations and climate change. At some stage in the next 12 months, however, every major business can expect to be asked about its greenhouse gas emissions and its mitigation strategy. Those asking such questions will be a variety of global and influential organisations such as the Carbon Disclosure Project, the Dow Jones Indices or FTSE Group, as well as governments and investors.

To respond to such questions and to demonstrate action, businesses will need to involve accountants. In the future, it will be the role of accountants to represent carbon-related actions in financial accounting terms in the annual reporting process. After all, finance directors typically have wider access to performance data than any other member of the board. They have the skills, knowledge and experience to define and establish measurement systems that can collect data in the most cost-effective way. They will need to understand how the carbon crisis will affect business, and whether there are investment opportunities to exploit.

In the absence of a global agreement on climate change, progress on reaching a harmonised reporting under international standards is very much a long way off. So with a plethora of reporting standards covering different emission scopes, company and geographic boundaries, preparing to report emission data for the first time can be challenging but can also deliver many business benefits.
In response to the challenges presented to the accountancy profession by this new business environment, ACCA's Accountancy Futures Forum, in partnership with UK Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010, will explore these benefits, alongside the various impacts to businesses as a consequence of new reporting requirements, changes required in governance, formulating adaptation policies, changing taxation and carbon trading.
