  Fiction Nonfiction

  Topic:

Fiction (such as short stories or novels) can teach us more about life than textbooks can. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

  Essay:

Reading good fiction or nonfiction is a great way to learn valuable life lessons, emotionally and intellectually. The more people enjoy reading, the more life lessons they will learn. However, for readers, it is sometimes hard to tell fiction from nonfiction as the two often intersect.

Of the two types of books that teach life lessons, perhaps the better loved emotionally isliterary novel or short story for its lively dramatization of human lives with all their internal and external conflicts. Here lies an important lesson about the dramatic struggle between opposing forces—two characters, a character and nature, or a character with an internal conflict. Successful stories have been invented to provoke human emotions associated with themes like love, death, jealousy, courage, ambition, revenge, courage and heroism, pride and prejudice, good versus evil, and so on. Roughly speaking, readers of fiction in their imagination can learn the causes and effects from the dramatic plot, and can then apply theinsights to their own situations in real life. Apart from providing pleasure, reading good fiction can powerfully expand readers’ emotional capacities and help them manage through conflicts as well as make life’s decisions.

In comparison, nonfiction is something that actually happened and not something that somebody made up. For that matter, readers can learn valuable life lessons from pretty anything fact-based that is a gateway to knowledge. Included are biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, documentaries, historical works, books on current events, and textbooks as a whole. For example, biographies offer glimpses into the triumphs and failures of notable people throughout history, and reading about the experiences of others can teachreaders valuable life lessons by helping them make the most of new opportunities in life. That is to say, nonfiction books allow readers to avoid mistakes and become better mothers, fathers, friends, co-workers, lovers and more by pursuing the textbooks laid before their eyes. While fiction is often more entertaining emotionally, nonfiction can be just as satisfying—and much more beneficial intellectually.

To sum up, the line between fiction and nonfiction is blurrier today than ever before . After all, when it comes to learning valuable life lessons, nothing is like reading both fiction and nonfiction, depending on the reader’s preference.
