Students may want to know how to pick the best professors for their university courses. Some prefer to choose a course whose professor is known to be the most popular while others prefer to take a course whose professor has just won an award for an outstanding research. For that matter, it can be argued that academic excellence is generally more important than popularity.

When it comes to taking a course, the importance of a professor’s popularity has wrongly been overestimated. Of course, a professor’s popularity is a wonderful advantage, and indeed some of the best professors have been highly rated due as much to their popularity as their achievements. But popularity is not the same as achievement, meaning that popularity should be no scale for the election of professors. If students’ choice depends only on popularity, then a professor’s job would be just to triumph over a popularity poll or to win popularity contests on the campus. It is true that some students seem to be obsessed with popularity, not being aware that excellence has never been about popularity. More often than not, popularity may be transitory; applauded today, forgotten tomorrow. There is nothing wrong to take a professor’s course because of popularity; nevertheless, it is probably wrong to measure the degrees of academic excellence by popularity ratings since not all distinguished professors are meant to be popular.

University students had better learn from the best professors rather than the most popular professors. Because academic research is a lot more important, and a lot greater, than popularity, it is more beneficial to take a course from an award-winning professor than from a professor who is simply known for popularity. That said, if a professor has just won an award for an outstanding research, then that professor must be a driving force behind innovation in science, technology, and culture. Since an award is in recognition of the winner’s excellence in a specific discipline, it is no secret that one of the best paths to learn is to hear about that professor’s academic achievement and thus to benefit from taking the course. Chances are that students can know much more than they think. That is why great professors rarely limit themselves to teaching. They are often working on research projects, writing books and doing all sorts of impressive things with their talents, not particularly caring about popularity.

To sum up, it is advisable for university students to take a course from an award-winning professor instead of a professor who is probably popular but is less successful in research. Of course, one has the right to choose from different professors. Remember, popularity is no substitute for excellence.
