Sample Essay:
People often treat their pets ( dogs, not cats) like members of the family and specifically acquiring a dog is the only chance they can have to choose a relative. While the fidelity of the dog has been well recognized, what is less known is that, if properly trained, a person can be a dog's best companion. It does not matter if dogs are partly humans or humans are partly dogs, there are two important lessons to be learned with respect to such relationship.
Lesson One: Not revealing what is not meant to be told. From the dog's point of view, he is one of us and morally better than many of us. In all likelihood, most dogs do not think they are humans; they know they are. Such presumption is not rediculous because, when we talk to dogs, we tend to forget that they are not humans. In general, the average dog is a nicer person than the average person, if only to see, for example, that they know but do not tell. Possibly, the reason a dog has many friends is that he wags his tail instead of his tongue. And you might say that this is the principle difference between the average person and the average dog.
Lesson Two: Being neither selfish nor political. Very unlike the cat, the dog is an unselfish friend in a rather selfish world. A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than you love yourself. For instance, if you call to a dog, he will break his neck to get to you and never ask why. If a dog jumps in your lap, it is because he is found of you; whereas if a cat does the same thing, it is because your lap is warmer. To him, you are his Napoleon because a dog does not care whether you are rich or poor, young or old, big or small. And yet, not any king, however influential, is capable of ordering around somebody else's dog, however ordinary.
To really enjoy a dog, you must try not merely to make him semi-human, and the point of it is to open yourself to the opportunity of becoming partly a dog. It is not at all clear if you treat your pet dogs as humans, they might treat you as dogs. Nevertheless, two conclusions can be made regarding the dog-man relationship--that a dog is man's best friend and vice versa; and that a house is not a home until it has a dog.
