  • TOEFL 托福真题:

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Leadership comes naturally; one cannot learn to be a leader.  Use specific reasons to support your opinion, and any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

  • Jeenn Lee Hsieh实验范文:

Leadership is about being charismatic, something mysterious people are born with, rather than something obvious they decide to do.  Such an extraordinary power to inspire popular hope, enthusiasm and devotion is rare; so are great leaders.  Provided that to some extent leadership skills could be learned, even further enhanced, one ought to be genetically lucky to become a leader in the first place.

Mystery about the power of leadership abounds and there could not be no power without mystery.  It is always like a sparkle which others are not able to altogether fathom, which puzzles them, stirs them, and rivets their attention.  However, charisma is nothing like that kind of influence which money usually can buy.  Generally, while this 'gift of grace' is inherent and invisible, its effects are visible and powerful. No doubt, charisma is a special quality associated with built-in personal abilities such as intelligence, since one must be genetically smart enough to become a leader.  Put simply, leadership more often than not comes naturally.

That leadership is largely made is the other side of the story.  In the world of leaders it seems that anyone has the opportunity to become powerful in high positions without being particularly mysterious.  Indeed, some leaders apparently do not carry any legacy, nor are they necessarily from 'like-tiger-like-son' families.  This might lead to the belief that one can be trained to be a leader by simply deciding to do the right thing at the right time under the right circumstances. Interestingly, this argument for the nurtured leadership is also based on charisma in an opposite direction.  Of course, at this point it is difficult to prove that charisma is the result of effective leadership, and not the other way around which is true.

As can be seen, the classic debate about the making of a leader is one focusing alternatively on nature or nurture. It is important to note, however, that the X-factor about leadership is probably destiny, with a beginning and an end.  A more likely conclusion must be that charisma is born rather than made, meaning that, without such spiritual gift from heaven in the beginning, it is hardly possible for anyone to become a leader at the end.
