  >Does progress reduce the number of problems in the world, or does solving old problems just lead to new ones. Use specific reasons and examples to support our answer.

  Example Essay (Jeenn Lee Hsieh)

As often as not, what we call progress is one problem in exchange for another problem. Provided that economic progress, such as the inventions of automobiles and airplanes, is necessary to improve our quality of life now and in the future; it is not always good in view of its environmental impact. Using the issue of transportation alone as a case to prove the point, we could not help thinking that the solution of an old headache may sometimes bring us face to face with a new one.

To begin with, progress can and does reduce the number of problems of the past, if we only have to look at the usually tedious and inconvenient means of transportation that used to be. Without a doubt, today's much faster and obviously more comfortable modern transportation has benefitted us tremendously in such ways as never before seen. The change has been remarkable, thanks to progress. It was then when the traditional forms of transportation might take us hours or days to go from one place to another; and days or weeks or even months to travel beyond borders and/or across the seas. And it is now when making a trip by air, sea or land may seem to us like a cup of tea, if we can afford it. In short, in transportation, and likewise in other aspects of civilization, we have found new solutions to old problems.

Unfortunately, solving such old problems as transportation may just lead to precarious consequences that are not at all in favor of the environment as well as human health. Facts are scary. Besides producing toxic substances like sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide that are fatal, burning fossil fuels to power our vehicles and airplanes gives off CO2 emissions, which contribute directly to global warming, which in turn is the leading cause of climate change. Further, no less alarming than the greenhouse gases is that these pollutants in the air are absorbed by the lungs, and hence can cause problems with the respiratory system, the heart, asthma, several types of cancer and other infections. All told, air pollution due to land travel, air travel and food transportation seems to be the price we are paying for economic progress in general. And here is the message: If you find a solution and become attached to it, the solution may probably turn out to be our next problem.

As a summary, transportation is just one example to argue that progress, however necessary as it may sound, is not necessarily good because in varying degrees solutions may lead to other problems. Accordingly, the key issue is invariably about economic progress versus environmental protection along with human health. In the end, it is hard to tell how much we have to gain by finding solutions to old problems, and meanwhile how much we have to lose by creating new problems, awaiting new solutions. Is Progress Always Good?

  TOEFL Idependent Writing

Topic No. 37 (out of 185)

  进步祸福 No. 5465A

  Jeenn Lee Hsieh 谢振礼

  >Do you agree or disagree that progress is always good? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Of all the modern inventions, computers alone can prove that progress is not always good. Despite the many benefits that new technology has to deliver, a computer machine, and with it the Internet, may leave room for doubt. The over-dependence of computers as a sign of progress may be destroying physical health and mental creativity to certain degrees.

To begin with, addiction to computer use is damaging human body. Sitting in front of a computer screen for a long time is harmful to eyes and the physical posture. Computers distract people from doing regular physical exercise in daily life, alter users' sleeping patterns, and even affect their eating habits. So much so, there are reasons to be worried about the unwanted influence of technological progress on people, particularly children. While such progress has positively changed the way we live and the way we work, a computer, along with its sub-device like cell phone, is said to be capable of causing diseases. Some scientists have reportedly confirmed cases of brain cancer as being related to over-exposure to computer-screen.

Excessive reliance on the wonders of computers may lead to a possible decline in mental development. To be sure, computers are the most recent demonstrations of progress, being magnificent tools for the realization of our material dreams. But no machine can replace human spark of spirit, compassion, love and understanding. It is as if digital intelligence were to take the place of the quality of extraordinary human intelligence forever. However, although one machine can do the work of 50 persons or more, actually no machine can do the work of an extraordinary person. If technology, for that matter, means the beginning of the end of human creativity, then the price of progress is unbelievably high in terms of human beings' mental growth.

Finally, the progress made possible by new technology is not 100 percent welcome in view of the likely ill influence resulting from over-use of computers on human body and mind. It is beyond our imagination that progress has benefitted us in so numerous ways, being too good to be true, as if gifts from heaven. Nevertheless, among all symbols of progress, computers, like dangerous addictive drugs, might come from hell.
